I officially welcomed myself to the year 2010 with a Netflix membership. Under ten dollars a month and thousands of movies are at the touch of my fingertips. After I registered, I browsed through the myriads of titles, and quickly realized that I will probably lose my husband to the biographies and war movies (well, we have had five great years together; it was wonderful while our marriage lasted). I can even stream workout movies and Curious George episodes with Netflix. There was an option to stream movies through our Wii, but I am new with the technology so that step will have to wait.

I went to a Moroccan restaurant

A few weeks ago, I ended my 40 day fast from spending money on restaurants and fast food. What better way to celebrate with good food, good friends, and a belly dancer (another first!). When we first arrived, I received my complementary mint tea. After about fifteen cups of tea, two bathroom trips, and a realization that the tea is loaded with sugar, I ended my love affair with the sugary substance. We ate soup, vegetables, lamb, chicken, quail, baklava, and an interesting camel cake.

a cowboy with his pony with a full knowledge of the tastiness of candy made for a fun night. After the first house, I could see the sheer amazement on my son’s face when he figured out the magic formula, a knock of the door with three magic words “trick or treat” equals candy. After the first house, he wanted to sit on the ground and devour the tasty treats.

Thursday night at the Cypress Community Center, 9 ladies, 1 man, and myself joined together to learn how to cook healthy foods. Most of the woman who attended were old enough to be my mom, and one was definitely old enough to be my grandma. We made a white fish dish, stir fry, spaghetti, and rice pilaf. Since taking the class, I have made two of the dishes and they taste completely different (bad different, but not non edible bad).

Chicken and lamb jumped out of the menu as some delicious choices for my entrée, but in the lower right hand corner, I saw “quail.” Normally, I would not have ordered quail, but this is a year of trying new things, so I gave it a shot. Lots of bones not so much meat. In fact, I made a little bit of scene when I swallowed a bone.

I got my hair cut at Platinum Strands

Platinum Strands is a salon located on Chapman Ave just a few minutes away from my parents’ house. Nine months without a haircut and a coupon convinced me that I needed to give the salon a try. The experience lasted only forty minutes, which was the same amount I paid for the haircut and a bonus scalp massage (which I almost fell asleep).

I was too embarrassed to pose with the sign in the background, so the sign will have to suffice.

I saw Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore

This fabulous edge of the seat thriller came out over summer time just waiting for Nicole to have a weekend free of consequences. Well that weekend has arrived. What’s not to love about a movie where cats and dogs join forces to fight evil. After seeing this epic flick, I am left with one question, “Why only 2.5 stars out of 10?”

I got my first ticket

Most times I go looking to complete “I have never,” but today my “I have never” came to me. I was on the 22 headed towards my parents house talking on the phone with Tyson. The phone was not pressed against my ear but it was in my right hand and on speaker phone. As I was conversing with Ty, I notice an officer give me a double take and not even a moment later the lights went on with the sound “Please exit the ramp.” I didn’t fight the ticket. I didn’t shed a tear. After the officer gave me my yellow paper of shame, a “thank you” slipped out of my mouth.

A few weeks ago a friend gave me a friendly announcement that his wife does waxing, then the week after that Nicole mentioned that I had a mustache, and some time later my dad mentioned something about facial hair to me. With the three separate incidents, I felt a strong need to no longer be a circus act. I purchased a handy three dollar bottle of hair removal for sensitive skin at Target. Immediately when I got home, I used the stinky formula, because I wanted to be mustache free for our outing that night. When I wiped the cream away from my face, the hair disappeared but left behind a red rash like mustache. I showed Tyson my face and being the sensitive husband he said, “Well, at least it matches your hair.” Not the words of encouragement I was looking for.

I beat my dad at Tetris

Just a few weeks ago, my dad challenged me to a tetris game on his wii system. He said, “If you beat my score, I will pay for your battery.” The battery is referring to a new $60 car battery. My dad gave the challenge to me thinking that I was inferior to his superior tetris skills. Well let’s just say I have a new battery, thanks to my dad.
